The 1978 Down East 38 is a robust, long-keeled, wheel-steered staysail schooner designed for versatility and adventure. With its two masts - an aluminum foremast deck-mounted and an aft mast keel-stepped - this boat is set up for both ocean crossings and canal cruising, thanks to its shallow 1.5-meter draft.

The boat is crafted from fiberglass with a teak deck and spacious aft cockpit, offering both strength and elegance.

Equipped with modern conveniences like a watermaker, autopilot, and wind instruments, the Down East 38 is designed for extended voyages. Its rigging system, featuring staysails on booms controlled from the cockpit, a furling Yankee jib, and a traveler for the main boom, provides excellent sail management, while the 402-hour Yanmar 3JH5E engine ensures reliable power when needed.
