Built in 1980 at the Svendborg Shipyard, Denmark, the vessel has been kept in good operational condition due to the high level of maintenance which has been undertaken by first the Danish Government and then the Royal Danish Navy. Also worth noting is the low frequency of use, this has amounted to only a little over 300 days of active icebreaking during her entire service life. Thorbjoern is a one compartment, diesel electric motor vessel with two propellers, constructed for icebreaking, towing operations and seaway surveying operations (Survey equipment has been removed).

 

The vessel is equipped with a towing winch and stern notch designed to receive and hold the bow of another ship by the towing line, making it possible to tow a vessel up close through difficult ice conditions. Thorbjoern is equipped with a Wartsila Air Bubbling system for improvement of icebreaking operations which reduces the friction between the hull and ice or snow by hull lubrication improving her icebreaking capabilities.  The system is operated from the bridge and has an additional benefit as it can be used to assist as side-thrusters during maneuvering of the Icebreaker.

 

Parts of the superstructure (steel surfaces - from the main deck and upwards) of Thorbjoern have been treated with zinc in order to prevent corrosion.
